Holiday Band Workshop

  • About our Workshop

Our Band Workshops have developed over 5 years exclusively with young musicians at heart. PopRoX Academy Summer Workshop is an extension of our hugely successful PopRoX Rock and Pop Weekend workshops that have been running out of Woking since May 2011. With 100’s of students coming through our doors each year.

  • Our Methodology

Our methodology is that “Children Learn better with the Songs they Love”. We believe it is important to engage in the learning process with music that retains the children’s attention and inspires them to learn and want to come back for more.

  • Our Faculty

We have a faculty of teachers that have been with us for many terms. They are all industry professionals in their own right and are exceptional musicians. Many have themselves been to Universities and Colleges to learn their craft too. We believe that having these skills is very important to be able to technically demonstrate an instrument but at PopRoX we believe that it is of the utmost importance that our tutors have exceptional teaching skills too, so not only are they awesome players they are also exceptional at teaching at whatever level, at whatever age and above all inspiring students to learn and play.

Our Workshops run with 1 Tutor per discipline in :-

    • Guitar
    • Bass
    • Drums
    • Vocals
    • Production
  • Manager

We have a manager on site who oversees the running of the day. This ensures we have the necessary skills on hand at all times to oversee and deal with any unexpected eventualities without disruption to other students.

  • We make learning fun

Learning music can be hard going if its delivered in a dry and uninspiring way.  We make learning music fun. The workshops are lead by Tutors that engage with the students, understand them and can connect at their level. We do not expect the students to be engaged 100% at all times and our Workshops are structured to include additional fun related activities to break the day up. Banter is common place between students and tutors. Students make new friends, form their own bands and meet up outside of the workshops. Its a great way of meeting people who have the same interests that you do.

  • Safety

Safety is a matter we take very seriously too. After all you are leaving your children with us to not only teach them but look after them for hours at a time. You can rest assured that our faculty is CRB checked, there is a 1st Aider on hand at all times and a Manager who is not engaged in the teaching process is on site and available to handle any issues with the students to ensure there is no disruption to the other students in case of an incident.

    Disabled Access

The WaterRat building is fully compliant with Disabled Access regulations and has a disabled access toilet and stair lift for access to the upper floor where the Recording studio and chill out area is.

  • Why a Band Workshop?

Our Band Workshop is designed to develop skills to a further level by applying what you learn in a band scenario. You can liken this concept to football .. a child may be great at kicking the ball against a wall or can do 100’s of “keepie uppies” but when he or she starts to play in a team, thats where the real skills develop and the more he or she plays the better they gets. Well thats exactly the same here too. Playing as part of a Band develops your performance skills, makes you engage with the other musicians, allows you to listen to the other instruments, helps you understand the structure, arrangement, dynamics and complexities of a song. It provides a sense of working as a team; wanting to learn and practice as to not let your band players down.

  • So what can you expect and what’s required of you?

    Our Summer Workshop

For our Summer Workshop, as well as working on popular contemporary songs we will require each band to write their own original song. On Friday you will get the chance to record your original song in the Recording Studio. We have a schedule which breaks up the teaching day to include some really cool activities related to being in a Band. AND Special guests from DWB Music will be dropping by to hold a song writing masterclass.

    Student Requirement

It is preferred that you have some skill on your given instrument. Have the rudiments covered and have had dabbled at playing rock and pop songs before of any genre. We are not expecting you to have played in bands but this would be a bonus as we will be teaching you the elements required to find, play with, develop and maintain a Band. the songs you will be playing are decided upon by us before you get here. These have been specifically chosen to include elements for all abilities. So if you’re a bit unsure you can take the “EASY” path or if your a more accomplished player the “ADVANCED” path. We won’t drop you in the deep end either. Before you step into your Band the tutor covering your discipline will take you through the elements needed for your performance providing tutoring, guidance and confidence to ensure your happy before you perform.

We would expect you to have your own instrument .. that is the Guitarists and Bass Players. Drummers and Vocalists we will have a full back line ( PA, Guitar Amps, Bass Amps and Drum Kit ) available at the venue. However “Your Sound” may require you bring your own Amp, Mike, Effects, Snare, HiHat etc so your more than welcome to bring these if you want. We are happy to store these if you wish during the Workshop period.

    Lunch Time

We don’t expect you to be at it solidly and there will be a lunch break for an hour. Please bring a lunch drink and snacks. there is a shop on site selling tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, snacks as well as drum sticks, strings etc. We will have available a TV and PS3 for those wishing to chill during the lunch break and those that are really keen can carry on playing. There’s even free WiFi access to catch up on your social networks and share what you’re up to.

    Drop Off and Pick Up

As we are responsible for the welfare of the children in our care. Pick up and drop off will be at the front entrance. Where your child will be greeted by a member of staff and at the end of the day released by a member of staff to the relevant parent/carer. Parents/Guardians are not allowed to stay during the Workshops. We are happy to give Parents/Guardians a tour at any time but this has to be accompanied by a member of staff. Doors will be locked during Workshops.

We also understand that some Parents/Guardians may be working during the holiday period. So we are pleased to offer early drop off and late pick up options. Please call us for details. Additional charges may apply.

We operate in partnership with WaterRat Music Studios offering excellent facilities throughout. Please visit our Facilities page to see more.

    Recording Experience

On the Friday we will record each bands original and or cover song (time dependant). You get the chance to see how a live band is set up for recording. How the microphones are placed in the live room. Liaise with the engineer in the Recording studio as you’re helped to lay down your track. Then jump into the Control room to help mix the song. It really is a true Studio experience.
